Guatemala has taken it's first step towards world-wide relevance. Literally.
Erick Barrondo captured silver, and Guatemala's first ever Olympic medal, in the Men's 20KM walk thing.
And yes, I'm well aware that it's not a sexy 'Sport' and I'm always criticizing weird events, but if it's good enough for China, it's good enough for us.

The Guatemala Diaries
The following is from a journal I kept during my trip to Guatemala this summer. It is nothing more than a collection of random thoughts, observations, and musings. The notes I kept were minimal, a stream of consciousness recorded in a pocket notebook on bumpy roads. I present selected passages, with limited revision, for your amusement.
Politics: Part One
There is a presidential election approaching in September. The road is littered with campaign posters. They are slick and over-produced. Candidates look like news anchors selling pop. The current president's wife divorced him, so she could be eligible to run. I bet Hillary wishes she could have used that one as an excuse.

Technology
Developing nation (3rd world is not PC)
Decrepit economy.
Social and political strife.
Rampant crime.
High levels of illiteracy.
Wi-fi is faster than it is at home.
