I sat. I ate. I watched...
What may have been one of the most boring Super Bowls ever.
The Game
It was an okay game, nothing more. There were a few spectacular plays, as to be expected from teams with so much talent, but they were ultimately marred by sloppy play. Tom Brady committing a safety violation? A running back who couldn't keep from falling into the end zone? 12 men on the field? (Which now shows a serious flaw in the way that rule is handled) Drop passes on the final drive? It seems like neither team were really trying to win.
What the game really lacked was any kind of story line. The inherit drama in sports is what makes it special; otherwise, it's just rich talented people playing a game. The Patriots are boring, and the only reason to root for them was so Brady and co. will get ring number 4? Really? That's it? Not very inspiring. On the other side you have the extremely mediocre Giants. The only thing exciting about them is that now the younger, less talented brother has twice as many rings as his older brother. White people problems.
Past Super Bowls had cities rising from the ashes. David's beating Goliaths. Teams you love to hate. This had no such poetry. Would have been nice to have the San Francisco, or Greenbay, or Tebow. Still think sports doesn't need drama to be great? Did you not watch the last day of the MLB regular season? Did you miss game 6? Sports is only really great when it matters, when it aspires.
The Show
Once again, the half-time show was a complete waste of time. Madonna is great. She's an icon with tremendous crossover appeal; this kind of show makes sense for her. But when you hide her behind circus acts and flavor-of-the-months, you cheapen her. Remember Prince a few years ago? He held everyone in the palm of his hand. He rocked that stage, solo. Madonna could have done the same, but they didn't even let her try.
The commercials also seemed incredibly lack-luster. "America." We get it. Turbines and cars and beer and shit. Supermodels are pretty. This is the YouTube age. You gotta come better than that.
One Last Thing
Why do we let Belichick get away with being a complete ass. "Unavailable for comment during the post-game?" Remember when we all got pissed when LeBron James didn't congratulate Orlando after losing to them in the Conference Finals a few years ago?
