I have this theory, that the more successful a music artist is, and the more they lose touch with reality, the more abstract and weak their songs become.
Michael Jackson's early songs were about love and the human spirit. Then, the bigger he got, the less in touch with normal people he became. His later songs had very little basis in our world and were fairly generic and boring.
A more contemporary example is Beyoncé. Her early songs were about being cool-ass chick or getting with a guy or being a strong woman. Her latest song about women running the world was filled with uninspired lyrics and the video was completely unrelatable. The whole thing was cold and stale.
The rap version is Jay-Z. His early songs dealt with the real struggles of inner city living. His recent work is about flying to cities we've never been to for a business meeting.
How am I supposed to enjoy that?
