You can't tell because it was a grey day, but the stadium was seaside. Nothing like that ocean breeze to make for a refreshing atmosphere.
The bleachers were separated by team alliance, visitors on the left, home fans on the right. The fans chanted and played instruments, akin to American college basketball games. Baseball sounds better with trumpets blasting funk tunes. Fans don't boo the opposition. In fact, you stay quiet so the other teams fans get to cheer. Respect.
Cheerleaders? Okay.
Japan never lets you forget that you're in Japan.
During the 7th inning, I noticed everyone was inflating these large, long balloons. I had no idea what was going on, or where they got those balloons. Then, in between innings, a mascot counted down. At zero, everyone let go of their balloons. The sky was filled and I almost crapped my pants.
Relief pitcher brought out on a convertible? Sure. Why not?
The coolest surprise? Tadahito Iguchi (of the 2005 champion Chicago White Sox) plays for the home team! I had no idea. I got so pumped and emotional... He had a great game, including a dinger. Seems to be a fan favorite, as well. Awesome.
