Owning Your Online Identity

I'm not huge on social networks. I don't have a FaceBook account, and I only use Twitter for events. LinkedIn is okay, but it doesn't seem as useful as it seems. Google Plus may a winner, if it was used more. But if they're useful to you, that's awesome.
But I would stress the importance of owning your online identity. The danger of those social networks is that you don't own your space. At any moment, you can kicked out of the club. If your FaceBook account was shut down, would you lose all those connections?
I can not stress the importance of owning your online identity. It's as simple as dishing out $10 a month to get your own domain. It's easy enough to set up a profile page linking to your all of your social networks.
The point of all this is to get people to recognize you, and not your profile. Don't give up your online identity to a company whose only interest is to sell ads to you.
