In LA, Steve Nash joins Kobe and company. The Suns are moving in a different direction (rebuilding) and Nash doesn't fit in that picture. He had to go. He gets to play out his last good days with another MVP on a title contender. While the Suns will suffer in short-term, they are taking a necessary step towards improvement. It doesn't help to be a bubble team.
On the East coast, we have a very different story. Ray Allen leaves a championship contender for a championship defender. The Heat get stronger at the expense of the Celtics. This move does nothing make both teams more boring. The Heat might as well have an automatic bye.
The salary cap is no longer serving it's intended purpose. Guys are taking a minimal pay cut to chase a ring. They know they'll make the money back through other channels. How about a salary ladder system? Instead of $60 million for a team to spend as they see fit, there should be limits on how many large contracts teams can offer. Something like one guy cam make $20 million, 2 guys can make $10 million, 6 guys can make $5 million and so on. The purpose of this system is to keep guys from joining forces and getting near equal pay. Each team should have a top guy and a couple of key players. In a weird way, it would be better if the players chased money instead of rings.
